Five Web Apps that Deserved More Attention in 2008

Even though 2008 isn’t exactly ending on a high note, we have definitely seen our fair share of interesting new web apps and online services this year. Some of those, however, never quite caught on, even though they are really interesting and cool.

Testing Wordpress on the iPhone

So Wordpress has finally released a native iPhone application. Not only do you get to try out how good you can type on the virtual keyboard, but you can also check which version of WP you are using, as it need at least version 2.5.1.
Update: cool – worked just like advertised.

Feedly: Bring Your Feeds Home

(Hat tip to Louis Gray for bringing this service to my attention)
After a long phase of private alpha testing, Edwin Khodabakchian today released an open beta of Feedly, a “more social and magazine-like start page for Firefox 3.” It’s release is, it would seem, timed perfectly in synch with the release of the final [...]

Plurk Review: Plurking Away

[If you want to add my as a friend on Plurk, you can find my profile here]
When I first read about Plurk, I dismissed it as yet another Twitter clone – though with a cool interface. I had read about it in early May, but I didn’t pay much attention to it then.
Yesterday, after I [...]

Pandora For Your Desktop: A Quick Review

Even if our Canadian friends can’t join into the party (thanks to the R, my favorite Internet radio station/music discovery engine Pandora is now available as an Adobe AIR desktop application.
The AIR app installs quickly and simply (just like all other AIR apps) and basically gives you the full Pandora online experience without the danger [...]

Mento Review: Social Bookmarking Made Easy

New bookmarking services don’t usually get me very excited, but Mento, developed by Gregor Hochmuth, is doing a bunch of very interesting things. Most importantly, besides being a very well-thought out bookmarking service in itself, it acts as a conduit for pushing your bookmarks out to other services, including FriendFeed (they look like just links [...]

Blogrize Review: Shared Feeds meet Social Networking

Jesse Spauling, the developer of Blogrize send me an invite to try out his new service yesterday. Blogrize is still in a private beta. Louis Gray had some invites yesterday, but they seem to be all gone at this point there are still some left, so hurry to Louis’ site and grab one.
Blogrize describes itself [...]

Toluu Review

I got an invitation to try out toluu a few days ago (thanks Louis!) and after I first went to the site, I have to admit that I had absolutely no idea what was going on until I read the FAQ.
Basically, it’s the new defunct ‘Share Your OPML’ with a little social-network and a recommendation [...]

Best of Travel Blogs

I am just planning a number of trips in the next few months (couple of Coast to Coasttrips and one to Europe and South America respectively) and given how much of an airline geek I am, I thought I would share some of the tools I use and blogs I read with  my readers. I [...]

Boing Boing TV Heading to Virgin America

According to Airline Biz, Boing Boing TV has partnered with Virgin America to provide:
“cheeky exploration of the world through Internet culture, DIY technology and geeky curiosities” through inflight daily video reports with the same irreverent and eclectic content that has struck a cord with pop culture junkies on BoingBoing.net.
Sounds like a good idea, given that [...]

Airlines are Cutting Back

As somebody who travels quite frequently, this article in the New York Times makes me anything but happy:
Meanwhile, nearly every major carrier has done away with free onboard
meals in coach on domestic flights, and has instead begun to charge for
individual food and drink items, often at hotel minibar prices. Earlier
this year, American Airlines, for example, [...]

Flight Info

Just saw Doc Searls talking about Flightaware. Flightaware is a great tool for tracking flights (especially those in flight already). Whenever I sit at the airport, I will check on the progress of the plane coming in to whisk me off to the other side of the country (through this, I have found out that [...]

Continental Airlines Botches Website Upgrade

Continental Airlines was to upgrade its homepage yesterday with a fresher looking design. Instead, this upgrade is turning out to be a disaster. Frequent flyers on flyertalk.com (one of the biggest forums for frequent flyers) are reporting that they are seeing other people’s reservations in their accounts, with the ability to change seats or even [...]

Google Now Does Flight Search

Google keeps adding new features. CNet reports that one can now type in two different airport codes and the search then returns a box to enter dates and the option to search Expedia, Hotwire and Orbitz. Would be nice if they added Kajak or Mobissimo to the mix, but an interesting new function nevertheless.
Update: You [...]
