Mento Review: Social Bookmarking Made Easy
June 2, 2008 | Comments
New bookmarking services don’t usually get me very excited, but Mento, developed by Gregor Hochmuth, is doing a bunch of very interesting things. Most importantly, besides being a very well-thought out bookmarking service in itself, it acts as a conduit for pushing your bookmarks out to other services, including FriendFeed (they look like just links [...]

Live Writer Technical Preview: The Best Just Got Better
June 2, 2008 | Comments
Microsoft’s just released a new version of its Live Writer blogging client. Live Writer is my default blogging client already, and the new version, with subtly but very useful new additions is going to become the new default for me.
The Live Side blog features a complete run-down of the changes in the new version. Here [...]

[Disclaimer: As you read this, please keep in mind that this is a review of a product in its very early stages - my initial assessment here is based on what the service does at this point - this can (and will hopefully) change dramatically as development continues]
I got an early invite for FriendBinder, [...]

Adsense heading to FeedBurner
May 30, 2008 | Comments
Feedburner today announced that Google is finally getting around to integrating Google Adsense advertising into RSS feeds created through FeedBurner. Apparently this will be rolled out within the next week or so.
You could always inject AdSense ads into FeedBurner feeds, by the way, but it wasn’t a very elegant solution and was supported as a [...]

Do What You Like With My Comments
May 29, 2008 | Comments
Steven Hodson has some interesting thoughts on the discussion around who own blog comments:
Well let’s set one thing straight right off the bat - comments are not frikken creative content for crying out loud. It doesn’t matter whether you make them on a blog or at the corner coffee shop. Once you open your mouth [...]

Sadly, Jaiku isn’t much of a Twitter alternative
May 29, 2008 | Comments
Shane Perris from Techwhimsy has an interesting guest post over on Sarah Perez’s blog about the current state of Jaiku:
Despite the fact that Jaiku has everything that the hottest 2.0 properties have, all tied up on one neat basket, Google has failed to get any mindshare at all amongst users and developers. Unless Google has [...]

I’m Breaking Up with Twitter
May 28, 2008 | Comments
Ever since I came back from vacation, Twitter has barely been functioning. At this point, it seems I have a better chance at winning the lottery than prediction if I can actually log into the service; sometimes I can log in on the site, but then Snitter might be locked out; sometimes parts of the [...]

Catching Up
May 12, 2008 | Comments
I’ve been out for a few days and just home for one more before I take off for yet another week.
From what I can see, I didn’t miss anything too crazy (though Scoble is crying tonight, I assume).
I liked MG Siegler’s thoughts on giving attribution to fellow bloggers - it’s definitely something I have seen [...]

As you know, I have been a member of the Grand Effect blog network for a while now and today, I am happy to report that my cranky friend Steven Hodson from WinExtra, Mark Evans from MarkEvansTech, and U.K. blogger Joe Anderson from Webby’s World have joined the Grand Effect blog network:
Joe Anderson (Webby’s [...]

I didn’t bother writing about the Microsoft/Yahoo non-deal yesterday - there are others more qualified to take apart the minutia of this event.
What was interesting to me yesterday, though (and apparently also to Robert Scoble), was that the conversation on FriendFeed was so much more interesting, in-depth, faster and interactive than anything I was seeing [...]

I find myself partly agreeing with Randall C. Kennedy over at Infoworld when he says that what he calls a “Streaming Office Suite” will eventually kill the pure online office suites (see his post for a full definition of a streaming app - it’s basically a chopped up version of software that is downloaded and [...]

77% of Internet Users Read Blogs - or do they?
April 30, 2008 | Comments
A new report from Universal McCann seems to be, at first glance, full good news for bloggers:
Globablly 73% of internet users are reading blogs with 48% including these (sic!) consumer-generated content in their weekly media diet.
The latest survey from media agency Universal McCann shows no signs of a pause in the explosive growth of social [...]

What do I owe you?
April 30, 2008 | Comments
Steven Hodson asked an interesting question today: What do I owe my readers? This lead to a number of interesting responses.
Sidenote: What struck me in the responses to Steven’s post was that they often revolved around the meaning of the term ‘blogger.’ Indeed, ‘blogger’ can be a confusing term. I can think of at least [...]
