There is a definite divide between those who produce and those who consume but the vast majority of 'consumers' will never become producers.

The real divide is not just between consumers and producers but it also has to take in to account the different types of consumer. Just because someone watched TV a lot it doesn't mean they they would be interested in other electronic entertainment such as the web.

Perhaps the more worrying thing for producers is if consumers stop consuming and start doing other stuff like going out with the family, playing sports etc. and take their attention away from ANY media.

It took quite a while for me to figure this out, but content will always win. I used to call myself a blogger. I do that less and less now. When people ask me what I do I usually say "I write for the web" or "I run a web site". It just happens to be powered by WordPress. Sure I occasionally do blogging-tip type of posts, but that's not my sites main focus.

Getting back to the content wins part - John Chow, one of the super-known "pro bloggers" - gets less traffic per month than I do. But you've never heard of me. Now I don't make anywhere near what he does, but his audience.. Well I'll leave that alone. Anyway, because I do nothing but content (tutorials), I've passed the 500k page views/month mark and it's not slowing down. My RSS subscriber count is lower than most "b-list" bloggers, but that doesn't bother me at all - I'm concerned with page views and visits.
