Opinionated Web 2.0 News and Commentary

Hugh Mcleod has decided to quit Twitter and apparently that’s a big thing.

What I find funny about this is that it has started a whole new series of posts where everybody and their poodle thinks they now have to defend why they think Twitter is important (Steven Hodson makes a similar point here).

You don’t have to.

It’s okay if you like Twitter. It’s also okay if you don’t.

Hugh needs some time off to write his book. Twitter can be a huge distraction and apparently it was too much for him.

Twitter can be a fun tool, a useful tool, and a total waste of time.

With Twitter, you are always left with the feeling that you have to keep up, which means you always leave it on so that you don’t miss anything. Also, because the communication on Twitter is slow, it takes a lot more time to have a discussion on it than by IM or IRC. And the steady stream of information while it is on can be a huge distraction (that’s why I keep it off unless I have some time to spare).

Sidenote: one of the things I love about Twitter is that there is no ‘presence’ attached to it - you can happily ignore anything and everything - even direct messages (just blame it on Twitter not working properly)
