Opinionated Web 2.0 News and Commentary

Wednesday Afternoon Thoughts

CNET is cutting 10%of its staff. It’s not immediately clear where these cuts are coming from (administration/journalists etc.), but given all the news around CNET, I guess most people inside the company saw this coming. I mostly read CNET’s blog - the more consumer oriented stuff never really interested me. I think their blogs are often quite excellent and I hope they keep that side of the business afloat.

FriendFeed got so much coverage lately, the company blog is now ranked #93 on the Techmeme Leaderboard.

I really don’t care how many people follow Jason Calacanis on Twitter, but it sure gives him yet another pulpit to preach to the masses to and pimp Mahalo. If only he would stop asking me to come chat with him live…

This list of the 25 most valuable blogs seems pretty suspicious to me. Looks like a pretty random list of big blogs organized by guesstimates of what they might be worth based on shady Alexa data.

Twitter is the service most often used by FriendFeed users. Not much of a surprise, given that most users likely post a lot more tweets than blog posts. Some statistics I would like to see: how much talk on FriendFeed is about FriendFeed and how many FF users actually actively use FF to comment, ‘like’ etc.

Some software stuff:

I’ve been running a nightly of Firefox 3 beta 5 and it is amazingly fast and stable. Looks like Mozilla has been doing a good job there.

I’ve also installed RC2 of Wordpress 2.5 and I love the changes they have made to the dashboard. I’m not ready to put it up here yet, but this release also looks quite impressive.
