Bring on the Pro Bloggers
February 17, 2008 |
I loved the discussion about pro bloggers today, no matter whether we call them journabloggers or anything else, because it has really highlighted my theory of the lazy bloggers who write quick and dirty posts that not only add little to the discussion but are often hardly researched at all.
Steven Hodson sums this up very nicely:
It is one thing to get those breaking stories or insider information but when you publish them with no more than a cursory check of facts or background information you are nothing more than a pop news publisher. This might satisfy enough readers to keep you financially solvent but you are doing a disservice to the blogosphere.
And that, as Steven says, is where the opportunities for bloggers (new and old) are today. It’s one thing to write posts that set StumbeUpon on fire or to write a quick and dirty breaking news story (and I admit that it takes skill to do that) but to me, that’s not what blogging is about. To me the joy of blogging is participating in the discussion of those breaking news items that Mashable, TechCrunch and others publish. That’s why I don’t worry about those stories taking up a major part of Techmeme sometimes. It’s those stories, after all, that give us the fodder for our commentary.
p.s. And with that, I think I’m going to stop writing about this topic for a while, because I have been beating this horse for days now and have little more to add to the discussion…
