Where do I go from here? and: Why I am semi-anonymous.
November 26, 2007 |
This afternoon I was thinking about where to take this blog in the next few months.
The blog is now just a bit more than two years old. It seems I have comfortable settled somewhere in the D-list of TechMeme commentators. I had one story on the digg homepage; a few posts that were StumbledUpon; decent, daily Google Traffic. The blog makes a buck or two from AdSense every day. People are commenting.
The question is, where do I go from here… how can I take the next step and grow readership beyond the core group that is reading the blog right now (thank you for reading this, by the way!).
My plan for December:
- More original content.
- Write at least five posts a day.
- Try to connect with more people offline.
I think that the fact that the blog is semi-anonymous doesn’t help either. If you read my twitter feed, check out my facebook page, call up my GrandCentral number, you know I am not really anonymous, but because of the dislike academic job search committees have for blogs, I can’t have my name and the blog associated directly for now. Quite a shame really, but a reality I have to deal with for now.

I like #1 and #3, but #2 “Write at least five posts a day” is an artificial construct which will definitely impact your ability to write good stories rather than reacting to news.
The concept of “More original content” is really hard to do when you’re forcing 5 stories a day. I try to average 2, and unless you’re sitting on a wealth of good stories, you’re going to bleed dry quick. If you look at TechCrunch, Mashable, etc., it takes them a staff of writers to get more than 5 stories a day. As individual bloggers, it’s hard to match that pace.
That said, I like what you bring to the table, and hope you achieve your goals! We’ll be watching.
Good point Louis. Maybe 5 is reaching a bit too far. As a commentator, I always depend on the news cycle anyway. If nothing interesting happens, I tend not to post much. That’s where I think I can fill the gap with some original content. I guess we will have to wait and see
