Podtech no more?

October 24, 2007 |

Update: Scoble says the Fake Steve post is BS. Scoble also claims that Podtech is making a lot of money from the commercial channels (God knows who watches those, though). Time will tell how imminent Podtech’s demise really is.

It’s kind of sad when a fake blogger has a scoop, because who knows if you can you trust him? According to Fake Steve, Podtech.net, the podcasting/vlogging company mostly known for harboring Robert Scoble’s show, is about to close down:

Hard to believe PodTech is going under, because they seemed to have such a solid business model. Find people who don’t have much of anything significant or entertaining to say; film them doing this; then sell advertising against the content. What’s not to love?

If it is true (and so far we don’t know, though Mashable and Valleywag have jumped on the bandwagon), then it doesn’t surprise me too much.

Podtech never had a breakthrough moment. When was the last time you thought you really wanted to see Dwain Kinghorn. the Altiris VP of Engineering speak? And with Scoble’s videos usually running for an hour or three, who ever had the time to watch something that might most likely not be very interesting? There was never a video on Podtech that was a ‘must see.’

Also, besides Scoble, Podtech never had any real players in its stable that would have drawn a crowd (except for that Loren Feldmann guy, but that didn’t work out so well if I remember it right).

They are doing a bunch of ‘corporate shows,’ but who wants to see those?

Well, I just hope Scoble keeps on blogging and ends up doing fewer videos…

This is utter bull. A complete attack on our business by competitors. I expected better from you.

PodTech had a break out moment in January of 2007 with the BlogHaus. Before that they had great podcasts and the founder had a good show til he stopped blogging and podcasting. To me the big problem is that they never established a content strategy that made sense. I contacred some people at PodTech who told me that the problems was a guy named Steve Gilmor. They hired a guy named Steve Gilmor who ran that into the ground.

Robert - You think somebody fed Fake Steve false information?

I wasn’t sure about the news myself - see the disclaimer in the first two sentences of the post.

Whatever the news is, it doesn’t change the fact that I think Podtech doesn’t have enough interesting content, though. And, as I have said before, I love what you do with blogging, but I am not a great fan of your videos. If Podtech went out of business, you could focus on what you are best at again. Might not be such a bad thing.
