Google’s Bookmarking Confusion
October 3, 2007 |
Jason Calacanis is asking why Google has three different bookmarking tools (Google Bookmarks, Google Notebook, and Google Shared Stuff). I wrote about this a few weeks ago when the Shared Stuff launched.
Bookmarking services at Google are going wild right now. I’m using *three* different bookmarking services with three different names at Google. I can’t figure out why these are three different products. The fact that Google has three products that are so similar and overlapping reminds me of… wait for it…. my time at AOL. Yep, when companies get really big ideas get sprinkled across various services (i.e. we had Friends at AIMPages and on Netscape and we were adding that concept to Weblogs, Inc. blogs).
Basically, Google has gone wild in terms of option, yet hasn’t focused on any single product. Maybe Google is so big that it just doesn’t care anymore about the fact that some products just linger in limbo and/or are not integrated with each other.
As for the bookmark tools, personally, I am a big fan of the notebook. It has everything I want. RSS feeds, good organization features, drag-and-drop, easy to use Firefox plugin, easy integration with Google Books. While it is the oldest product in the group and hasn’t seen any updates since its inception, it is still the most fully featured.
