Apple’s Quest to Agonize Users

September 26, 2007 |

Today, according to TUAW, Apple send a takedown notice to the ISP where one of the iPod Touch hackers was just about to upload some code that might jailbreak the Touch:

But what’s amazing here is how fast Apple moved on this– either they’ve got someone listening in on the development wiki, or they’re taking cues from us on how things are going over there (hi, Apple!).

I would be surprised if Apple wasn’t checking out these sites - however, what annoys me is that Apple is starting to lose a lot of goodwill by this.

Maybe (just maybe) one can buy the argument that Apple didn’t want an open iPhone because of security reasons. But the touch would have made a great little device to develop for. With some third-party software, it could be the ultimate iPod, PDA, browser, internet phone etc. But no, Apple had to cripple it. Now, because of this, goodwill among the tech community might just start waning very quickly…

At the same time, those hackers are ingenious - Apple should think about hiring them instead of working against them
