New iPods Coming Tomorrow

September 4, 2007 |

Here are my pre-Apple Event prediction:

Everybody and their poodles are expecting Apple to release new iPods tomorrow. The expectation is that we will see a wide- and touch-screen iPod but there is no consensus yet whether it will be hard-disk or flash memory based. I am going for a HDD based model, simply because the regular iPod has traditionally had the largest capacity. However, maybe Apple could release a HDD and a flash memory based player around the same form factor, yet at different price points.

There will also be some new iPod nanos, but I really don’t think we have seen what they will look like, yet. Some rumors about video on the nano have been swirling around, yet I think the screen is too small for video. Or is the nano going all touch-screen as well?

If Apple decides to go touch-screen all the way, I hope they will add some physical play/forward/backward buttons, because many of us use our iPods without looking at them while driving or jogging.

The shuffle is still a pretty fresh product, so I don’t expect to see much more than a capacity increase.

What about the rumors about radio on the iPod? With a function to buy songs you hear right away through wifi? I am calling BS on this one. the Stevster doesn’t like radio. People buy the iPod so they don’t have to listen to radio (no matter whether it is FM/AM/HD or satellite). Anyway, I am partial to podcasting, so I really don’t care about radio.

But Wifi? Please Apple, give us wifi. And while you’re at it, give us a browser as well. And Contacts. Oh, and email - basically, give us on iPhone with a high capacity drive and without the phone functionality.

Or, as Dave Winer said today much more concisely:

Dear Apple: Let it support wifi, let it connect directly to the Internet to get music and podcasts, and let’s at least start to get rid of syncing as a way of life.

But radio? OMG that’s so 20th Century. Fugghedaboudit.
