Must be the summer…

[begin rant]
Following the tech news in the last two weeks or so, I continually surprise myself by my general disinterest in what is going on these days. I already didn’t care much for the twitter hype at the beginning of the year, and these last few weeks have seen little interesting news besides the daily barrage of iPhone non-news.
I care little about who runs Yahoo, or what happens at Facebook. I use neither. Actually, I have never joined an online social network. I just don’t care about them and hence whatever great widgets are popping up on Facebook, they just don’t matter to me (am I an old fart now?).
There are also very few interesting new products out there that us geeks can jump on. Maybe that’s why so many of us are so fascinated by relatively mundane things like who is going to produce the Halo 3 action figures.
While I like the fact that the iPhone apparently is going to have 8 hours of talk time, I will believe it when I see it. I have no reason to distrust Apple on this, but the iPhone hype machine has just spun so far out of control, I am just waiting for it to be a flop at this point (I still have to meet that person that is going to spend $500 on a phone).
I guess it is just summer. Not much news coming out and us news junkies getting slightly frustrated. Maybe we should be thankful for the iPhone hype, because otherwise we would spend out summer just reading the Fake Calacanis blog and guessing who this guy is (or who Fake Steve is, for that matter).
