Let’s Cool the iPhone Hype Already

Robert Scoble complains about the iPhone hype:

Speaking of iPhone, I find I need to escape the Bay Area to try to get away from iPhone hype. This weekend I’ll be down in Cabo speaking to a bunch of PR professionals (Monday is the opening of Apple’s developer conference and almost everyone else who’s in the press is going to try to get a look at the iPhone).

At the end of the month I’ll be speaking at the Utah Blogger Conference. But, really, you’ll find me in line at the Salt Lake City Apple store.

Where are you going to buy your iPhone?

The answer for most people is going to be: nowhere. The iPhone is a great device, but as of now, I expect it to be a sales disaster. I hear a lot of people say how great that phone would be – but I don’t hear a lot of people talking about actually buying one.

The reasons are very simple: price and the fact that everybody already has a cell-phone that makes phone calls and an iPod to play music.

Nobody I know wants to sign up for expensive data plans just to browse the web. How many people can really justify spending $100 on their phone connection? If the phone were $300 and the cell phone plans $50 a month, they would sell like hotcakes.

Convergence is great, but I can still live very happily without surfing the web anywhere I am. Do I lust after the iPhone? Sure – I want one, but I really can not justify the expense, especially if I could drop and break it at any moment (that’s why I carry an el-cheapo LG C2000 phone – you can drop it and it just bounces back up – and it makes phone calls, which is all I want from a cell phone).
