Wallstrip Acquired by CBS – Is There Money in Blogging?

After a weekend of rumors about this, it turns out that CBS has really acquired the financial podcast Wallstrip. I have to admit that I had never heard about this show before these rumors started flying a few days ago.

The general consensus seems that CBS was mostly interested in getting the talent (I hear rumors of a pretty girl hosting the show). Does that mean that there really is money in blogging? Probably not – at least not for most bloggers. But it does show that the benefits of blogging are often tangential.

I like the ideas Technically Speaking has on becoming a pro-blogger in this context:

If you start a blog,
and if you want to be a professional blogger, you better be prepared to give it your all. Running a blog has distinct responsibilities. These are ones that many blogs simply can’t adhere too. It’s usually due to lack of time, or lack of commitment. Many think instantly that blogging is going to lead them to TechCrunch or ShoeMoney type of money from the get go. If you work, yes, you could possibly reach that.

Here is the problem, with no solution. Of those 70 million plus blogs, how many do you believe are live? How many do you think are registered, and given up on after a few months? A few days or weeks? I would guess that is a pretty big majority. How many do you think are updated infrequently? Like hit and miss, not worth loading into your feed reader. That is the issue. You can be a train jumper, and jump on this supposed money train, but there are others here that are working day in and day out. They may not all have the CBS deal, but they are all worthy of something.
