A Return to Blogging

May 20, 2007 |

Following the lead of some much more high-profile bloggers, I took some time off from blogging.

I spend a very interesting weekend at the International Congress on Medieval Studies and then did some traveling last week (even if it sounds like a Renaissance Fair, this is the largest conference on anything medieval in the world - lots of Augustine, no jousting). I did present a paper at the conference which was quite well received. For tech folks, though, the way we present out material must seem like the lamest possible way: we read out a pre-written paper. I try to stay away from that as much as a can and ad-lib as much as seems reasonable in the context of this conference. If I would just talk about my subject (and I know it in-and-out, so that wouldn’t be a problem), people would probably think I am lazy and unprepared (art historians seem to be the only ones who get away with doing this, I think).

But just like at tech conferences, the interesting stuff happens in the hallways, not in the presentations.
