Digg Gives In – Kevin Rose Posts the HD-DVD Code Himself

I was blown away by the reaction on Digg and in the blogosphere around the posting and removal of the HD-DVD code on yesterday.

Have a look at Techmeme as of 8am PST today. Most of the page is taken up by stories about this. Even the iPhone didn’t create that kind of reaction. Even the NYTimes picked up on it today.

Digg has decided to give in to the mob and the diggers have decided to stand down their revolt. Here is part of Kevin Rose’s reaction:

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

I am not sure I like the language of “going down fighting,” but I am sure it will turn out that this was the right thing to do for Rose. Nothing can be more important to a social news site than the users and when the users speak up so clearly against a policy, the site has to do something. Once you have blemished your reputation, users will just move on to greener pastures.
