Blogger and Podcaster Magazine – What a Brilliant Idea

Oh yes – we now have our own print magazine – with the aspiration of having a circulation of a quarter million by the end of 2008 (link to pdf media kit).

When I first heard about this, I thought it was a joke. Really – what is a magazine going to do for blogging and podcasting? Given the lead time of magazine publishing and the speed with which the new media evolves, there just isn’t anything a print magazine could do that would really compliment anything that I can find on the web already (for free instead of a $79 subscription). What is this magazine going to give me that I didn’t already read a month before the publication date?

Here is an interview with the publisher, Larry Genkin, just in case you wonder about what what he has to say.

And Tish at the Constant Observer also has some interesting comments:

Another irony is the print edition, which at a hefty $79 a year, kind of proves my point about having money in order to make money in new media. Sorry. Low-rent losers get very little free content–right now, just blog posts by “Larry” “shelly” and “Anne.” And maybe I’m not “bloggery” enough, or A-list-y enough, but I don’t recognize any of the folks on staff as bloggers (then again, there are bloggers who don’t know who Tim O’Reilly is either…)

Makes me wonder though if the staff really know anything about the community and culture of blogging, or if they’re just a bunch of people who know a bunch of other people who blog….

I wondered about the same thing. According to the press kit, they do have some big podcasting and blogging names writing articles for them (who, by the way, took that horrible picture of Rob from Podcast 411 that makes him look like a living UFO?). So there might be hope there, but why are these people looking for a magazine to write for? When it comes to blogging and podcasting, they already have bigger names in the community than 99% of all bloggers and podcasters (and this magazine is not aimed at outsiders from what I can tell).

Also, what the hell is up with the tagline: For Aspiring New Media Titans?

For those who are now excited to read the first edition, just follow this link.
