Media 2.0 vs. Web 2.0 = Adam Curry vs. Dave Winer
April 21, 2007 |
[danger - this is an angry, very rambling post of a flu-infected blogger]
These two guys will never get tired of their disagreements. In the latest installment of this sage, Adam Curry reacts to this piece by Dave Winer (which I commented on yesterday).
Curry basically tells us of the great things he has done for podcasting (and because of this, I think he feels nobody who hasn’t done the same is allowed to criticize him - and because it hurts the 70 people working for Podshow). And of course he doesn’t fail to mention his mtv.com heritage either.
But here is the low point of the posting. This is what Curry says about Dave Winer:
So its an obvious personal disappointment that Dave writes off the work he inspired as ‘podcasting technology’. I’ve got to think he hasn’t even bothered to really look at what we’re doing, because the hypocrisy of calling us a ‘fakeout’ while last week privately offering Manila and Radio UserLand for sale to us as ‘a match’ just doesn’t make sense.
As the media industry moves from tracking ‘uniques’ to measuring TSE (Time Spent Engaged) the next 5 billion dollars spent on advertising will be from brands who are looking for an audience with their customer. As we turn the corner from ‘podcasting’ to Media 2.0, tracking relevance will simply not be enough, creating relevance is the future.
I don’t know much about business ethics, but it seems like a very cheap move to reveal private conversations about a possible business venture online.
Also, I am sorry Adam, but I think if Podshow were really doing as well as you say it is, it would be reflected in the publicly available stats. If those are so wrong, just give us the data you are working from.
Besides, Time Spent Engaged sounds a lot like marketing speak to me, by the way. I spend a lot of time engaged with content, but I spend absolutely no time engaging in the advertiser’s part of that. That’s what the fast forward button is for. How are you going to measure my engagement while I am sitting in the car listening to podcasts?
What I have always disliked about the podshow venture was the emphasis on money.
Here is Ron K. Jeffries’ take:
You have to wish that these two pioneers could just get along. [grin] in may ways the two each have strengths that other one sorely lacks. Winer has technical creativity and brilliance, while Curry is artistically creative and a marketing genius.
I agree with the general point, but I just don’t think the Curry is such a marketing genius. If he were, why aren’t more people listening to podcasts (and Podshow podcasts specifically)? I am the odd one out in my group of very technical friends. My students don’t listen. Over time, advertisers will start thinking of podcasting as a fad and move on to the next thing that gets hyped.
And my God, am I f*cking tired of being told that my ears and eyes are for sale. I don’t want to engage with your advertisers. I don’t give a crap. If I need something, I will read an unbiased review and won’t trust the opinion of some dude who got paid to say some product is great. If I wanted that, I could just read PayPerPost blogs all day.
Think of all the money the VSs have poured into Podshow - what a waste. What does Podshow do that podcasters can’t do by themselves? Content delivery isn’t the problem it was three years ago. There are enough companies out there willing to find advertisers for your show. The Music Network could have been created in a more open-source way by an alliance of podcasters. Podshow doesn’t have much of a future in the long run.

What can Podshow do for pdocasters? Well last week I posted a show on the Podshow server, but forgot to add it to my feed. So the only downloads I received came from traffic at podshow.com (not my subsribers)
When I discovered my mistake 3 days later I had 180 downloads. Granted not staggering numbers (My podcast it a niche show for musicians), but there are plenty of podcasters who would love to have close 200 downloads in 3 days.
