Those New UMPCs Are Looking Good
April 18, 2007 |
Josh Bancroft of Tinyscreenfuls.com points to a video shots by some of his co-bloggers at Intel during the Beijing Intel developers forum.
If this is what the next generation of UMPCs look like, I could be tempted. But then, isn’t this what the next generation of cell-phones looks like as well? Are we going to see some convergence between the UMPC and phone market? Wouldn’t it make more sense for Intel to work with Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and the like to slim this just down just a little bit more?

Thanks for the link!
As far as cell phone convergence, I think we’re definitely headed in that direction. I have some HTC Windows Mobile phones that I basically use as UMPCs for email, web, etc. on the go. As soon as we get the “beefier” platforms, with desktop processing power, into a small enough package, I fully expect my phone to be a PC someday soon.
In fact, many of the new UMPCs that have been announced include some kind of “WWAN” cellular capability - like HSDPA or EVDO for high speed wireless data usage. That already puts the radio in the device - using it as a phone from there is simply a matter of software.
