SecondLife and Marketing
April 3, 2007 |
Eric Kintz lists 10 reasons why he isn’t convinced about marketing on Second Life. Kints lists 10 good points, but I think the problem with Second Life is actually far simpler.
I am quite convinced that marketing on Second Life is a BS idea. Second Life was a fad - it is already over. Go out into the real world. Ask people about Second Life. How many blank stares do you get?
The hype around Second Life was fostered by people who barely used Second Life themselves talking to other people who barely used Second Life, but both groups thought it was the greatest thing since bread came sliced and told everybody else so. But nobody uses Second Life anyway, just like nobody is going use Twitter in six months from now.
Why would I go to some Wells Fargo island in Second Life anyway? If I want something from my bank, I call them or just go to the branch. People in Second Life are lonely geeks who want cyber sex or feel like they life out some Neuromancer fantasy. Thats it. No more, no less.
Any marketer who fell for the SecondLife BS should be fired quickly before he or she dreams off some Twitter or Tumblr marketing scheme.
Here are some other takes on this: WebProNews, Marketing Profs Daily Fix and B.L. Ochman’s weblog.

Oh well - every now and then I like to write a no-holds-barred post - especially before my morning coffee kicks in
