DesktopOnDemand Review – Preview
I was reading about DesktopOnDemand on Read/Write/Web yesterday and immediately applied for a beta account. This morning, my beta invite appeared in my mailbox.
The Read/Write/Web review gets the idea of the service somewhat wrong. DesktopOnDemand (DOD)is not yet another WebOS play – instead, DesktopOnDemand allows you to remotely access a GNOME desktop running on top of what seems to be a Fedora Linux platform. While you can run the desktop in your browser through a Java client, the better way of running it is through what is basically a VNC client over a secure connection. The goal of DOD is not to become another Goowy, DesktopTwo etc.
I have been playing around with the service for a bit now and I am very impressed. The desktop is responsive, the software installed on the GNOME desktop is up-to-date and relevant (AbiWord for word processing, Liferea for RSS reading, RhythmBox for music, Evolution for mail and calendaring etc.). Everything works the way you expect it to work and the desktop is fully customizable.
I will write a more in-depth review later today, but I just wanted to correct what I read on R/W/W yesterday. This is not only going to become a very useful product, it will also be a great way of showing people the power of a GNOME linux desktop.
Oh, and I have 25 23 invites I can give away…
