Clicks Must Die
March 7, 2007 |
According to Valleywag, social networking site Facebook has a beyond horrible clickthrough rate of 0.04%. That’s only 400 click for 1.000.000 impressions.
Is anybody really surprised about that? I always hear that people want ‘relevant’ ads and they will magically click. More and more, I have come to believe that that is BS. Have you clicked on an ad lately? Do you know somebody who has? I don’t.
Also, consider what people are doing an a social network - they are communicating. In a similar vain, forums, too, have horrible clickthrough rates, because users are interested in interacting with each other. They don’t care about the ads that are being displayed on the site.
In general, though, I think we are living in a society saturated by advertising. If we can ignore it, we will, no matter how ‘relevant’ it might seem to us. I know we have no alternative for it yet, but I think it is time thinking about it, as users will get better and better at ignoring ads and I don’t think ads becoming more intrusive is an option.
