Jonathan Coulton in Portland
I am horrible at writing music reviews, so I won’t even attempt one, but seeing Jonathan Coulton live in a small pub/bar in Portland, singing Baby Got Back and Code Monkey has definitely been one of the most fun experiences of the year so far (for me at least – and my wife loved it too, which was a bit of a surprise for me because she sure isn’t a geek and this was the geekiest audience I have ever seen at a show).
The place was absolutely packed, with at least half of the audience standing for the whole two hour show. And Coulton seemed to have a good time as well, giving four or five encores and chatting with fans for quite a while after the show (as well as some really funny, stand-upy banter during the show).
He is a great example of how one can attract a fan base through the net and giving away music. I hadn’t bought a CD for years until I bought Coulton’s CD at the concert, as well as a T-shirt.
