Flight Info

Just saw Doc Searls talking about Flightaware. Flightaware is a great tool for tracking flights (especially those in flight already). Whenever I sit at the airport, I will check on the progress of the plane coming in to whisk me off to the other side of the country (through this, I have found out that the plane for my regular flight from Newark to Portland, OR is coming form the Bermudas and often delayed for some reason).
Another tool I love before I book a flight is FlightStats.com. There is no other site with a more comprehensive and well displayed array of data on specific routes and flights (see the history of on-time performance of this trip from Hartford, CT to Newark and you know why I always book myself on the earlier flight).
It is also a great site to see if there are any ground-stops or delays at an airport right now. Definitely a great tool to check out when flying into a major airport like Newark or Chicago’s O’Hare, both of which are prone to delays for wind, snow, congestion etc.
Lots of great tools for the frequent flyer out there. If you are an Elite member in one of the many frequent flyer programs and you hope for a complimentary upgrade, you have to check out SeatCounter, for example. It will give you an overview of how many seats in what class are still available (for Continental, the available upgrades are the ‘R’ class, for example, but other airlines use different schemes).
And if you really get into it, the forums at flytertalk.com can’t be beat when it comes to polite and extremely informative discussions.
