Microsoft Invents Yet Another DRM Scheme

Because there are never enough DRM schemes out there, Microsoft today announced PlayReady.

DMWmedia asks the right question:

PlayReady is definitely designed for interoperability, but what about “Playsforsure” and Zune’s own DRM system built upon the same Windows Media technology portfolio? Will PlayReady interoperate with “Playsforsure” and Zune’s “Playformyown?”

Who at Microsoft makes these inane decisions to pile on new DRM system every few months. Is there a hope there that one will stick? Clearly, the world is moving away from DRM in the first place, but with PlaysForSure and the Zune DRM system, why does MS need yet another one?

Are there actually content providers out there who want to support yet another system? And why the hell does MS consider this to be a breakthrough?
