Intel Presents 80 Core Chip

February 12, 2007 |

As promised last year, Intel has demonstrated the prototype of an 80 core processor over the weekend. That’s a lot of cores, but they produce a teraflop of computing power. Just what to do with that power and how to program the chip seems to be a bit of a mystery still, but it seems Intel’s approach is that if you built it, they will come.

As always when a product like this appears, there will be those who herald it as the greatest thing ever and those who say that they old Pentium III is still working happily and they won’t need to upgrade.

I for one love the innovation that is coming out of Intel lately. While software and Web 2.0 have been far sexier, with a teraflop of processing power Microsoft must surely be able to create an amazing GUI…

Here is Intel’s press release and the Incremental Blogger is asking who is going to port his OS to this processor first. My bet is on Linux…
