Links, Power, Scoble and Jarvis
January 30, 2007 |
Very thought provoking interview at ZDNet: Power blogging 101
In it, we get a short summary of a panel with Jeff Jarvis of Buzzmachine, Peter Rojas of Engadget and Elizabeth Spiers, founder of Dead Horse Media, which publishes Dealbreaker.com. The panel was moderated by Steve Rubel of Micropersuasion.
Here is a comment from Jeff Jarvis that jumped out at me:
Do big bloggers have a responsibility to link to little guy?
In a word: No. Jarvis says the link debate is tiresome.
“You link on merit. Telling me who I can link to is crap. It’s personal. I link to those things I see and I find. It’s just a conversation.”
This discussion has always been tiresome, but nobody is telling anybody who he/she can link to. That would, indeed, be crap. But, with the power an A-lister has comes some responsibility to groom a next generation. It is an illusion that great content will get noticed. If it only gets noticed by your mother, it doesn’t get you anywhere. An A-list blogger should at least keep his/her eyes open for new talent. And that is my last word on the A-list/linking discussion.
