Apparently, the American Dialect Society decided that ‘Plutoed’ is the Word of the Year, which is utter nonsense. Here is what it supposedly means:

To “pluto” is “to demote or devalue someone or something” much like what happened to the former planet last year when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto did not meet its definition of a planet.

“Our members believe the great emotional reaction of the public to the demotion of Pluto shows the importance of Pluto as a name,” said society president Cleveland Evans. “We may no longer believe in the Roman god Pluto, but we still have a sense of personal connection with the former planet.”

And here are the uses I have found doing a quick Lexis-Nexis search in all national and international newspapers ever indexed: - nada. Same if you search on Google News.

Nobody every used this word until the ADS came up with it. Very, very stupid. Looking at google, I only find uses AFTER the Dialect Society announced this. One example: Michelle Wie gets ‘Plutoed’.

Next year’s Word of the Year: poodanga.
