Why the Apple TV Will Succeed
January 11, 2007 |
I see a lot of bickering on online forums about the Apple TV. Seems the $299 price tag is too steep for some given that an Xbox360 isn’t that much more expensive. Others think they can build this on their own with linux and mythTV and others don’t like the specs.
But, geeks are not the target customers for this device. The customer for the Apple TV is pretty clearly defined:
- already has an investment in content bought on iTunes
- already has an investment in other Apple hardware
- has an HDTV
- is not interested in spending a lot of time to set this up
- enjoys the simplicity of the device
I do admit, though, that leaving out a TV tuner seems to be the crux here. But again, the typical buyer probably already has a DVR anyway. The Apple TV is clearly aimed at playing content that would normally only reside on a computer in the living room. And that, as Chris Kundsen points out, is what it is all about for Apple and is why this product might turn out to be more revolutionary than the iPhone. In the end, when all your content is on your computer, what do you need that DVR for anyway?
The question now is: Are there enough people who want it?

I might not like the specs, but I like the package overall.
I do think that 1080p wouldn’t be much more expensive (if at all) and would appease videophiles.
Of course, this paves the way for the Apple TV 2.
