Adam Curry’s Predictions for 2007 are mostly BS
January 1, 2007 |
I am just reading Adam Curry’s predictions for the media industry in 2007. Mostly, they are wrong, I think. I can’t help but think that Curry is living in a bubble where podcasting and IPTV actually matter. Newsflash - they don’t. Real people don’t care yet and won’t care in 2007.
Here is the worst of his predictions, though:
An advertising form known as the informercial, will gain critical acclaim as spot advertising shifts from 30 seconds to longform programming concepts - Will it Blend??
I call this bullshit - audiences (=all of us) are already fed up with advertising - getting it pushed down our throat in an informercial (I assume this is a better form of infomerical, but I just can’t listen to the DSC anymore, so I am not sure if there is a back story to this) just seems like a really, really bad idea.
Even sponsorships are catching more flack these days. People want real stuff, uninfluenced by advertisers or sponsors.
Oh, and by the way, podcasting had its make or break year in 2006 - it didn’t make it - nobody cares.

Wow, aren’t we the bitter one!
You may well be right that people are fed up with advertising, and that infomercials may be a really bad idea, but none of that will stop it happening because (and here’s a thought) content you watch or listen to has to be paid for by someone or something. If you can think of a better way to get stuff made in audio or video, then I think it’s about time you declared it - for the sake of us all.
Happy New Year.
Adrian, I agree - a very bitter post - my excuse is the post New Years hangover I had, but I stand by the content.
I have no idea what will replace advertising as we know it, I just know that I am more and more fed up with it and I am sure I am not alone. I am tired of people thinking advertising is going to finance everything.
There just has to be a backlash sooner or later. Maybe ads will continue the same way the do now, but their value will be almost zero. I hope somebody smarter than me will come up with a good idea - and soon.
