TechCrunch Going South

December 5, 2006 |

About six months ago, TechCrunch became THE site to read if one wanted to know about the most recent developments in Web 2.0 land. Since then, the focus has shifted from in-depth, critical reviews of products to - well - to what? The reviews are typically so-so. Too often, I get the feeling that the writers are trying not to upset the company being reviewed in hope that one day, that company might advertise on TechCrunch. And too often, it’s the fact that they get scoops that get you to read the site, not the content itself.

The drop in the bucket for me was the “Google Somewhat Froogle At Holiday Press Party” article. Really, who gives a fu&$?

There were about 100 people at the Mountain View event, including Sergey Brinn and Larry Page, who both seemed eager to escape post haste. Luckily I caught up with them for a quick chat and photo before they left the party for some “real food.” (We only got hors d’oeuvres and sushi served on a surf board.)

Take TechCrunch back to the basics - and bring back Mike Arrington from his vacation. Now that Valleywag has turned to more serious matters, there is some real competition out there for TechCrunch and nobody is noticing it.sergeyandnatali.jpg
