Skype 3.0 Beta Released: A Major Update
November 8, 2006 |
Skype today announced the release of Skype 3.0 Beta, with lots and lots of new features and UI updates. I am especially interested in some of the new features, as they are going to make some things that have typically been very hard for novice users very simple to use. Especially, the company is referring to screen-sharing and whiteboard applications built in or through plugins (they call them extras). A lot of these, of course, were available already, but Skype never promoted them as they are doing now.
Other new features are browser extensions, an improved sound settings wizard and public chats. It is interesting that voice quality is not on the list of items they worked on.
It also seems the company is making a special effort to make Skype enterprise compatible. A lot of companies have either restricted the use of Skype to a specific, tested version, or banned it alltogether. None of this, of course, is in the interest of Skype.
We’ve gotten a lot of input about how to make Skype more enterprise-friendly, and we have incorporated many of the ideas into Skype 3.0 in the form of our improved enterprise compatibility, easier installation and security features. We will post more information about this as the beta progresses.
UPDATE: the new version of Skype Guide for Network Administrators is now available from our security resource center. It is the essential resource for any IT administrator considering the benefits and risks of Skype in a corporate setting, now updated for Skype 3.0 beta.
Download here, and see this page to find out how you can give us feedback to improve it.
