Emusic Downgrades New Subscriptions
November 3, 2006 |
I just got an email from emusic, saying that their new packages will all feature less downloads for the same money, Hre are the plans:
Plan 1: 30 downloads per month (formerly 40) for $9.99/month
Plan 2: 50 downloads per month (formerly 65) for $14.99/month
Plan 3: 75 downloads per month (formerly 90) for $19.99/month
If you already subscribe, you can choose not to change anything and your plan will remain the same. You have to wonder, though. As emusic is the second biggest online music retailer after iTunes, shouldn’t they be able to leverage that size at this point and actually make the opposite move? They used to offer an all-you-can eat plan early on after all. Is emusic bleeding money?
Typically, I have bought maybe around 30 songs a month that I really wanted and used the other 10 to just get stuff that I wasn’t very sure about. That’s actually how I found Sufjan Stevens and others. I would guess, though, that a lot of people don’t download all the songs they are entitled to. I know I have gone a month now and then without donwloading anything. I would guess somewhere, emusic had to make a business decision. Maybe costs were just getting a bit too high. I don’t think there has been any communication from the company about the reasoning behind this move.
Some others have noticed, too, and so far, the comments have not exactly been positive (though a few have defended the company).
