Odeo Shuts Down - Welcome Obvious Corp.
October 27, 2006 |
I am somewhat sad to see that the end of Odeo as we know it is gone - the assets of the company were acquired by Obvious Corp., which will keep the services running. Basically, Evan Williams who was already CEO of Odeo and probably most famous for co-creating Blogger and Biz Stone bought out the assets from the origianl investors and shareholders. A bold move, I think.
Last December, I said the company would shut down before the end of the summer. At that time, the company reacted and said:
Check back with us next summer and see if we’ve closed our doors

I guess I would have to lie if I said I didn’t find some satifaction in the fact that my prediction was at least close to right…
In the end, the problem for me was the Odeo didn’t do anything I and most others interested in podcasting needed to be done. The directory was okay, the other functions superfluous.
Good luck to everybody at Odeo, but Evan Williams is a very smart guy and his post on this points to the interesting directions I think he will take Obvious in.
The New Model
We are attempting to create a new model for building and running web products. Nearly everyone I know in
the Internet business is either at one of the giants, wishing they were at a startup, or at a startup that hopes get bought by a giant.
