I always thought the problem with digg was monetizing the service. Digg remains a niche product, with a niche audience, even if it has tried to break out of the tech market. The typical digg audience doesn’t click on ads in the rate that would be enough to sustain the service. Bringing digg into the fold of a large company that would market it to a more diverse audience might be what digg needs financially. For digg as we know it, though (as a haven for our geeky selfs) - it would be the end.
