Google Co-Op Allows Custom Google Searches
October 24, 2006 |
Google today launched a new version of the Google Co-op, adding an easy way to create custom searches. Some possible uses for this could be search engines for specific site - such as the Last Podcast (the built-in ones in blogging software tend be quite useless), or for a very specific topic. I went ahead and created both. Here is a link to the search for The Last Podcast Blog, and here is one I did on Medieval Studies (very limited, but shows the potential).
Here are a couple of things I like:
- possiblility to exclude sites
- the site marker works great and makes it extremely easy to add material
- collaboration functions - you can invite others or enlist volunteers
- monetiziation through adsense in the search results opens up another income stream to bloggers
Cons:
- no memorable urls (try http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=016678257586007145495%3Ayelafwcypgq)
- does allowing open volunteering open up the service to spammers?
Overall: thumbs up. It won’t be long until we see this cropping up in all kinds of places.
TechCrunch, as usual, has more details on this.
