How Can A Marketer Reach Me?

OIG%20Medicaid%20Work%20Plan.jpgLet me give you some biographical data: I am a 29 year old male. Masters degree in English, working towards a Ph.D. Married. No children. Located smack in the middle between Boston and New York.

Because I forgot to charge my iPod, for the first time in months I had to listen to the radio while driving to work today. For the first time in months, I was confronted by ‘regular’ advertising. I had gotten used to the little spot in front of Podshow podcasts or Leo Laporte’s old school way of doing advertising on TWIT or the Daily Giz Wiz. I found myself so irritated by the radio that I had to turn it off. I got to listen to one song, then a seemingly endless stream of advertising - on every channel. None of the ads even remotely interested me or were targeted at me.

This got me thinking - how can an marketer reach me today. Here are some options that are closed off:

  • and no - I don’t care for local news
  • Online - dare I say Firefox with Adblock?
    • sometimes I am shocked to see what the web looks like to people with Internet Explorer
  • email - if gmail doesn’t filter it, I will, without looking at it
  • So how can you reach me:

    • sponsor podcasts
    • direct mail
    • seriously - I have to check my mail and I might even browse your catalog in the bathroom
  • sponsor online streams of TV
    • ABC does this pretty effectively, with only 30 second ads, about three times during the show
    • they are not targeted, but I can handle 30 seconds

That’s it. I don’t see how a marketer could reach me in any other (legal) way. Like a lot of tech savvy people in my generation, I live online and have learned to block out the noise. You want to pitch something to me? Give money to Leo or Adam.
