The Social News Faceoff

ReadWriteWeb today features a nice comparison between Digg, Netscape, Newsvine (a personal favorite of mine) and Reddit

Here are the conclusion:

There are really no surprises here - Digg is the king of social news. It is simple, elegant and very very popular. The question is what will happen going forward? Comparing digg with Netscape, note the difference between the number of votes on a technology post vs. a political post. For the technical post there is a huge gap between the two sites, but it is not as big for the political one. So digg remains the premier social news site for technology news - but in other categories that are geared more towards mainstream, there is not as much activity.

Nothing too spectacular there, but a good way of keeping score. This is a developing market, but these sites have all been around for a while now. I don’t see anybody kicking digg of the throne anytime soon, but with different target demographics, there is space for different niche sites. Netscape’s traffic doesn’t seem to be growing, though I am sure Jason Calacanis is going to disagree here.

That said, digg’s update a few month back was supposed to bring in a new demographic, but the clear focus of the site is still tech news. Newsvine, in my opinion is the king when it comes to non-tech stories.
