Dave Winer: Politics and Tech
October 1, 2006 |
Dave Winer has been catching a lot of flak for making a number of political postings over the weekend. Here is one of his latest postings to give you a flavor of what he is saying:
Republicans have made “liberal” a bad word, but they’re too dishonest to be open about it. Me, I’m openly trying to make Republican a bad word. Anyone with a heart and a mind who admits to being one had better explain the President and the Congress. You’re responsible for this mess. In November you have a chance to be part of the recovery of this country. If you feel at all sorry for all the death you caused you need to what you can to fix it. Let’s start with a new Congress. Then we’ll hold the impeachment trial. People say Cheney would be worse. No he wouldn’t, not after we send Bush back to Texas, assuming they’ll take him

All I can say is hat’s of to Dave. I think part of why he is getting so many comments from readers is because tech people are not supposed to meddle in politics - no matter if they are right or left wing. Too many of the technorati are not involved enough in politics. Right now, we are all too wrapped up in the Web 2.0 bubble to realize what is happening around us.
But technology doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When we have to talk about DRM, it is because we have a leadership that was elected by a majority (at least the second time around…) and is ignorant of the issue. Radio and TV suck because religious zealots have an open ear in Washington that nobody else besides big corporations get the same kind of access to.
Technologists need to be deeply involved in politics because their work becomes useless if the country continues on the slope it is right now. Why create means for people to express themselves if that expression is going to be censored or going to lead those disagreeing with the establishment in jail?
