Google Reader Just Became Useful
September 28, 2006 |
Bloglines, Feedemon, Newsgator etc. Watch out. Google Reader has just re-launched with a completely new layout and setup. It now looks very much like Newsgator or Bloglines.
This might be a game chaging event in the RSS space. Google definitely has the power to push a lot more people to using RSS than anybody else.
From the Google Reader Blog:
As of today, Google Reader has a new look — and even more important, a lot of new features that we think you’ll like. We’ve listened to your feedback, done usability research, and examined all the ways that people consume content on the web, from feed readers to email clients. With a clean interface and some JavaScript wizardry, we think we’ve built an application that accommodates a wide range of reading styles while being fun and easy to use.
Oh, and Dave Winer is going to like this - there is a mobile version, too.
First impressions:
- I like it. It is fast. It has some neat new features to share stuff I read with others, tagging etc. Good job google - I had given up on the reader a long time ago and thought it was going to be one of the many abandoned-yet-not-dead Google projects.
- I also like the build in mp3 player for podcasts.
- It very much feels like a desktop application and I can see myself ditching FeedDemon for this.
- Google offers a Subscribe bookmark - I think that’s the first time I have seen this feature.

All of the features you mention in your first impressions were there before…
Sketchee - they probably were there before, but given how badly the user interface was designed, I never gave it a second look, let alone spend time to figure out what the features were.
