Wordpress VIP Service?

September 26, 2006 |

Wordpress.com is now offering a $250 (+$500 set-up fee) a month VIP hosting package for bloggers with more than 100.000 hits a month.

Here is what you get - if you get in, because they are going to be selective about who gets to pay them:

    • You create WordPress.com accounts, import your content, and point your DNS at us.
    • We load balance your site across our dozens of servers.
    • You can have your own domain name.
    • All of your administration will be over SSL, which means no one can sniff your password.
    • People logged in to WordPress.com will also be logged in on your domain, which makes it easier for them to comment and link you. (Also gives you free integration with our My Comments, Tag Surfer, and avatar features.)
    • Included Akismet spam protection.
    • Inclusion in our top lists, which can drive a great deal of traffic.
    • You will have the ability to edit your templates via Subversion (SVN).
    • You can run most plugins (that don’t modify DB tables).
    • There are no restrictions on ads, javascript, etc.

So basically, they are hosting your blog. But in return - they want money, a wordpress.com logo, tags, hooks to their stats system and your soul.

If I were paying somebody $250 a month for hosting, I would give them that - 250 bucks and whoever gets $250 for hosting a blog should surely not expect anything else.

The digg crowd is having a field day with this.
