Stage6 Can’t Handle Being Dugg
August 24, 2006 |
Reviews have been trickling in about DivX’s Stage6. Om Malik Katie Fehrenbacher of GigaOM praises its video quality, but the problem right now is that the page is unavailable after arriving on the digg homepage in the middle of the night. Now there are many reasons YouTube is succeeding, but the fact that they seems to be able to handle whatever traffic is thrown at it is definitely one of its plusses.
When it works, though, it is a great product. The video quality is indeed lightyears ahead of anything YouTube is doing right now. Have a look at CommandN on Stage6. This site definitely changes the perception of what internet video should look like and might put some pressure on YouTube. For that matter, why didn’t DivX license their codec to YouTube - now that would have been a great combination for everybody involved.
If I have something to gripe about though, it is that I can’t find a way to imbed the video into a blog yet. The success of YouTube, I think, was made possible because of that feature.
If anything, though, DivX might be able to create a site here that can quite possibly compete with YouTube due to the quality of the videos. But first, they need more bandwith…

The high quality is great and all, but what is most interesting is the ability for an uploader to make money off their videos by setting a price. I don’t believe any other site offers this?
It wasn’t OM but Katie(who is a fellow blogger at GigaOM).
Thanks nano - it’s corrected.
A nice utility DivX provides for embedded video.
