Podcast Site Roundup

August 24, 2006 |

Evan Williams of Odeo wrote an interesting roundup of Alexa data from various podcasting sites. Odeo, which really doesn’t seem like the most active community ranks as #2 right after Libsyn, where a lot of shows are hosted, so one would expect them to be #1. I admit that I think the fact that Odeo is #2 makes me a bit nervous because it doesn’t bode well for the traffic on the other sites, and indeed Podomatic is ranked 10,878th and even the almighty Podshow doesn’t rank higher than 15,603.

What worries me the, though, is that a lot of these sites show flat or downwards trends. Even Podshow is trending down. But then, if most people listen to podcasts on their iPods, aren’t they going to use iTunes anyway?

I think a list looking at the Top10 podcast in iTunes would be far more useful. Twit.tv, for example (though it is a network site), ranks as 14,825th and is trending pretty flat with a short uptake when the site design was updated, while Adam Curry’s curry.com seems to have peaked and is trending down (but then, he hasn’t been in the iTunes Top 10 for a very long time either).

Maybe the lesson from this is that it is going to be hard for podcasters, all of whom say that their downloads are up, to move this audience to a website.
