Edgeio and Its Critics
February 14, 2006 |
Have have to give this to edgeio, while I have my doubts about their product, they are facing their critics head on. The latest post might be a bit cryptic still, but I have to give props to a company that is willing to link to its critics. Definitely makes me want to believe that they might indeed have a plan after all.
There are three key things people bring up when questioning whether or not edgeio will be successful.1. Will bloggers want to post classified listings on blogs?2. How to deal with the inevitable spam onslaught?3. Assuming 1 & 2 are overcome, what stops everyone from entering the market?
My first post was a bit snarky and hyper-critical, but I am still wondering if the idea can gather critical mass. I am not so much worried about others ‘exploiting’ the tagging idea, I just wonder if there will be enough people tagging stuff to go around.
If their interface is good, edgeio is already half-way there. At least that allows them to dominate their market. I assume they are planning for tagging and blogging to become as ubiquitous as email. After that, the user experience is what is going to matter the most.
Being first to market with the idea might help, too, but of course is no guarantee for dominance in any field. And then there is the problem of gaining critical mass…

Hi Frederic
Thanks for the acknowledgement. We do indeed have a plan. Check out the post on my personal blog (http://www.teare.com ).
We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and start explaining it all yet as a lot depends on the speed of early adoption, but rest assured we are committed to having a dialogue in public (”markets are conversations”).
Best regards
