A,B,C Lists

February 13, 2006 |

Jumping off from NY Magazine’s blogging cover article, Steve Rubel argues the following:

So, here’s a secret. The list doesn’t matter. It’s like a Billboard Top 100. Tomorrow we won’t be singing Bill Halley’s Rock Around the Clock. So, can we all stop with the A,B,C’s and move on or is too much at stake financially? We are bloggers, hear us roar. We all matter - today and always. End of story. E pluribus unum.

He points at this 2002 list of top blogs at Technorati, saying they are now very different. Well, I looked at it and I was surprised how many are still there. Some indeed I do not recognize (and some are not even blogs, such as cnn.com, 127.0.0.1 or apple.com), but all the usual suspects are on there: Boing Boing, Doc Searls, Instapundit, kottke, Little Green Footballs etc.

It is funny to see how all the A-listers are so defensive about their A-list status - almost pretending the phenomenon does not exist. Well, Steve, it exists. A link from an A-lister is worth a lot these days and breaking into the A-list is not a given, even if one works hard on a blog. If one looks at links on blogs, they are often very self-referential in that A-listers link to A-listers, just as everybody else does. That’s the way things are.

I would say: A-listers: embrace your status, but use it wisely. Give me a link… please… just once… I will link back and make my 20 readers check out your blog - promise!
