Catching Up
January 16, 2006 |
I have been happily travelling for a while, so its time to catch up on the news.
MacWorld:
First of - MacWorld. A bit of a disappointment there. No new iBooks, though it makes sense to upgrade the PowerBook line first. Not sure why somebody thought MacBook was a good name, though.
I am waiting for the iBook upgrade to make the move into the Apple world. iWeb looks interesting, but a bit too
glossy for my taste. Haven’t seen any site made with it, though. The FM remote… looks good - doesn’t add much that other’s haven’t done though.
Newsvine:
I also got an invite to check out Newsvine.com. It’s pretty much digg.com on steroids. Not just tech news, but every kind of news. Very well designed website. Great use of AJAX. Very interactive. Every story even has a real-time chat linked to it.
Right now,
though, it doesn’t have the critical mass to be interesting. People on there are mostly people interesting in tech stuff. My feeling is the owners want it to go more into the world news direction, but that’s not where the users are heading. Another problem - the news moves too fast - often, there are uncommented stories on the front page because, well, the crititcal mass for a site like this is huge. You can have 100 users on a tech site with five articles and have some fun. But Newsvine must have something akin to 1000 articles a day. I would guess, if they stay under 500.000 users, the site will go down because users won’t find the interaction they are looking for.
CES:
Maybe I missed something, but it seems nothing really interesting came out of it. The only thing that caught my eye was the demo for Flight Simulator X during the Bill Gates‘ keynote…
Google announced Google Pack… great… maybe it is a Trojan horse and just the beginning of something great. For now, it is not worth anybody’s attention.
