Pew: Men and Women use Internet in (Almost) the Same Way
December 30, 2005 |
Another Pew Poll about the Internet. I was not amazed by the last one (lots of meaningless talk about remixing content etc.). This new one focusses on the different way women and men use the internet. It has been reported on CNN and other mainstream media outlets. However, if you read the poll, most of the differences are negligable. Very little of interest is different between the way men and women use the net, even if the executive summary makes you want to believe so. The only major difference I see is that men are more likely to browse for adult content. A result that is neatly tucked away at the end of the report and not mentioned in the executive summary.
How Women and Men Use the Internet: Women are catching up to men in most measures of online life. Men like the internet for the experiences it offers, while women like it for the human connections it promotes.
But, at the end of the summary:
Still, our data show that men and women are more similar than different in their online lives, starting with their common appreciation of the internet’s strongest suit: efficiency. Both men and women approach with gusto online transactions that simplify their lives by saving time on such mundane tasks as buying tickets or paying bills.
