Google just released its Zeitgeist for 2005. Some interesting results. Janet Jackson is the most searched news item. Ranked higher than Katrina. Most of the top searches in the News category are actually celebrities (for the sake of it, I will include Harry Potter in that category…). XBox 360 is #4, following Jackson, Katrina and tsunami. How did Janet Jackson get there? Wasn’t the wardrobe malfunction in 2004?

This year also features, nice graphs, such as for Natural phenomena or  World Affairs. I just wish they had added some exact data to these graphs. As of now, this is just relative information, but there is no way to know if ten thousand or a million people searched for “Ratzinger”

Here is Google’s Press blurb:

It turns out that looking at the aggregation of billions of search queries people type into Google reveals something about our curiosity, our thirst for news, and perhaps even our desires. Considering all that has occurred in 2005, we thought it would be interesting to study just a few of the significant events, and names that make this a memorable year. (We’ll leave it to the historians to determine which ones are lasting and which ephemeral.) We hope you enjoy this selective view of our collective year.
