A Podcasting Vision
November 13, 2005 |
Dave Winer posted some interesting thoughts on podcasting today . He is what caught myeye:
I know some people think it isn’t important, but I want to carve out and reserve a space for people to be creative for each other. We have a cultural disease, the belief that only plastic imitation people have a place in the media. I believe in something different. I love the creativity of real people, and the creativity of the people I love. I want the flaws, that’s what makes it precious. I don’t care about your business model, that doesn’t mean you can’t have one. But I want to be sure you don’t roll us over just as we’re getting something interesting going.
He then goes on talking about how he hoped Adam Curry could have been the poster-child for this (and maybe was, until he started talking about business models too much). I find myself agreeing with Dave here.
The disease that has been spreading around the podosphere is business. Listening to Adam, even I started to think about how to monetize on my podcast. But that’s not why I started - the idea was simply about getting heard. Having a voice. Who cares if there is money involved. The one thing you will hear podcasters say all the time is that ‘it’s all about the content.’ You got good content, people will come. After that, you can think about maybe getting a sponsor. But how many people have the energy to wait until then? Only those who deeply care about their content and those who get postive feedback. Everybody else will drop out slowly.
The Daily Source Code these days too often sounds like an infomercial. Morning Coffee Notes at least sounds like a guy (though often a grumpy one) talking about stuff he deeply cares about. I find myself preferring that more and more.
