Bloggers as ‘Amateurs’
November 11, 2005 |
In a reaction to a post here, Dave Winer thinks that amateur is a good word to describe bloggers. Kind of in a ‘going-back-to-the-roots’ way. This is what he has to say:
Amateur is a good word to describe the work of most bloggers. The root of the word is “love,” an amateur is someone who does it for love. The Olympics used to be all-amateur, which implied high-integrity.
Well, guys, maybe ‘amateur’ sounds good to you, but to me, it’s meaning is a best ’somebody who tries, but isn’t very good at it.’ Today, we expect everything to be professional - just look at the naming conventions for software with all the lite versions standing for sub-par stuff for, well, ‘amateurs,’ and the professional versions being the only ones really worth considering for anybody who actually know what he/she is doing.
Does any of this have anything to do with making money of your blog? Dave Winer thinks adding ads to a blog is stupid and takes away from the message of the text. Well, if I had sold weblogs.com for a few millions, I would probably thinks so as well, but as it stand, the few bucks this blog makes pay at least partly towards my hosting bill. Doesn’t make me less of a blogger, I think.
And you know what, being called a blogger is just fine with me.
